‘세월트루스닷컴’.. “가족들 특별법 제정 요구에 힘 실어 줄 것”
‘세월호 특별법’ 제정을 촉구하는 SNS운동이 국내뿐 아니라, 해외 곳곳에서도 일어나고 있다. 해외 동포들을 중심으로 시작된 ‘세월호 캠페인’은 전세계인의 참여로 더욱 활기를 띄고 있다.
세월호 참사 유가족의 권익을 보장하기 위해 구성된 자원봉사자 모임인 ‘세월호의 진실(sewoltruth)’이 그 중 하나다. 이들은 미국, 캐나다, 독일, 영국 등 세계 곳곳에서 외국인들의 ‘세월호 캠페인’ 동참을 이끌어내고 있다.
이 모임이 운영하는 홈페이지 ‘세월트루스닷컴’(sewoltruth.com)에는 많은 외국인들이 노란색 배 모양의 피켓을 들고 찍은 사진이 게재돼 있다. (☞ ‘세월트루스닷컴’ 바로가기)
‘go발뉴스’는 지난 19일 ‘세월호의 진실(sewoltruth)’ 트위터 계정을 통해 이들과의 접촉을 시도했다. 이후 이메일 인터뷰를 요청했고, 지난 23일 ‘세월트루스닷컴’의 한 관계자로부터 답변을 받을 수 있었다.
이 관계자는 ‘go발뉴스’의 이메일 인터뷰에 응하게 된 이유에 대해 “세월호 가족들과 한국 사회 내의 모든 노력에 힘을 실어드릴 수 있기를 바라는 마음으로 흔쾌히 응하게 되었다”고 밝혔다.
이들이 이 활동을 시작하게 된 결정적인 계기는 유일하게 영문 자료가 있던 특별법 발의 2만 서명 운동 때문이다.
지난 5월26일부터 국제청원운동 사이트인 ‘아바즈’(avaaz)에서는 세월호 진상 규명 청원 서명이 진행되고 있다. 이 청원은 2만 명 서명을 목표로 하고 있으며, 26일 현재 약 1만7000명이 서명했다. (☞ ‘아바즈’ 바로가기 )
이 관계자는 “희생자 가족분들이 특별 수사를 요청하는 과정에서 큰 혼란이 있다는 것은 뉴스를 통해 전해 듣고 있다”면서 “사건에 대한 적절한 수사가 표류하고 있는 상황 또한 활동에 영향을 주었다”고 밝혔다.
이어 ‘세월호 특별법’ 제정이 “가족들의 유일한 요구이기에, 저희 역시 그 요구가 받아들여질 수 있도록 돕고 싶다”고 전했다.
이들은 또 2만 서명이 달성된 이후에는 천만 서명 운동에도 함께 한다는 계획이다. 이 관계자는 “이를 위해서 천만 명 서명 운동 자료 역시 영문으로 만들어진다면 좋겠다”면서 “SNS로 천만 명 서명 운동을 널리 알리고 싶다. 특별법 제정을 위해 더 큰 목소리를 실어드리고 싶다”는 바람을 전했다.
그러면서 “한국 바깥에서도 세월호 가족들과 그들의 서명 운동을 지지하는 이들이 있다는 것을 알려 부디 세월호의 비극에 마침표를 찍을 수 있기를 바란다”고 덧붙였다.

It gives us a great strength to hear and realize that there are people like you who continue to act as voices for the victims' families. We are happy to answer your questions with the hope that it will give strength to the victims' families and their efforts in South Korea. However, please understand that sewoltruth.com can in no way represent the ideas of every volunteer involved in this project because everyone participating in this project is simply a volunteer. We are not an established organization, but rather a social media movement in which anyone is welcome to participate in. In order to reach as broad a group as possible to support this initiative we try not to take any political stance. Q. What's your view or opinion on the Sewol disaster? How have you felt about it? All volunteers who take part in this initiative are deeply saddened by the Sewol disaster. The fact that so many innocent children who had their whole lives ahead of them were taken away is hard to accept especially knowing that they could have been saved. We feel deep sorrow towards the families of the victims and want to support them in any way possible. 저희 활동에 참여하는 자원봉사자들 모두 깊은 슬픔을 느꼈습니다. 순진한 학생들이 망망대해 같은 미래를 뒤로 하고 희생되었다는 사실은, 특히나 그들이 구조될 수도 있었다는 것을 알기에 더욱 더 받아들이기 힘들었습니다. 저희는 희생자 가족분들에 대해 깊은 슬픔을 느끼며, 어떤 방법으로든 도와드리고 싶습니다.
Q. How did you plan this petition project at first? The campaign started with a few people who felt that the need to act. It started in one region and spread quickly to other regions through social media. So far there have been campaigns to raise awareness in Washington D.C., Los Angeles, Dallas, New York, Toronto, Vancouver, London UK and people from several other countries have also inquired about how they could raise awareness of the Sewol tragedy and spread the word about the victims' families petition. 처음에는 행동해야 한다고 생각한 몇 사람이 모여 시작하게 되었습니다. 그렇게 한 지역에서 시작했지만 소셜미디어를 통해 금세 여러 지역으로 빠르게 퍼지기 시작했습니다. 지금까지 워싱턴 D.C., 로스앤젤레스, 달라스, 뉴욕, 토론토, 밴쿠버, 런던 등지에서 세월호에 대한 관심을 촉구하고 서명 운동을 알리고 싶다는 문의를 받았습니다.
Q. We are wondering about your members. We are not an established organization with an office, but rather a gathering of people who can empathize with the victims and their families. Anyone is able to participate in this initiative, simply by requesting our banner and using it to raise awareness. We are amazed at how many people have already participated up to this point and want this momentum to grow. It is a great way for people from different backgrounds to come together to support a cause that can have a large and positive impact on society. 저희는 사무실을 두고 공식적으로 활동하는 기관은 아닙니다. 그보다는 희생자들, 그리고 그 가족들과 공감할 수 있는 사람들의 모임쯤이라고 해두는 것이 좋을 듯합니다. 저희의 피켓을 사용하셔서 서명운동에 대한 관심을 유발하길 원하시는 어떤 분이든 저희 프로젝트에 참여할 수 있습니다. 이미 참여해주신 수많은 분들을 보며 저희 역시 놀랐고, 여기서 더 탄력을 받을 수 있기를 바라고 있습니다. 각기 다른 배경을 가진 사람들이 모여 우리 사회에 좋은 영향력을 끼칠 수 있는 불씨를 만든다는 것은 정말 멋진 일이라고 생각합니다.
Q. What do you think or feel about the reactions of Koreans to the disaster? It is quite difficult for us situated abroad and so far away to be able to properly judge the general reaction of Koreans to the disaster. We can gather from the news that there is frustration on the part of the victims' families with their efforts to have a proper and independent investigation conducted to find out the truth of what actually caused the tragedy. It has affected us as well seeing how long it is taking for a proper Sewol investigation to be conducted; it is the one thing the victims' families is asking for and we want to support them in having their request granted. 먼 곳에서 지켜보는 입장으로써 한국 국민들의 반응에 대해 판단하기는 쉽지 않은 것 같습니다. 다만 희생자 가족분들께서 특별 수사를 요청하는 과정에서 큰 혼란이 있다는 것은 뉴스를 통해 전해 듣고 있습니다. 사건에 대한 적절한 수사가 표류하고 있는 상황 또한 저희 활동에 영향을 주었습니다. 가족들의 유일한 요구이기에, 저희 역시 그 요구가 받아들여질 수 있도록 돕고 싶습니다.
Q. You are getting signatures worldwide till it gets 20K and pictures of picketing people. How did you think of the number 20K? When it works, what is the next step with the signatures? We are supporting the 20k petition created by the victims' families because it is the only one that exists in English and easy for people outside of Korea to participate in. At this point the goal is to help this petition reach 20k signatures. After this goal is reached we would like to work with the petition committee to link to their 10 million signature petition. For this to happen, an English version would need to be created. However, we do not know who to contact and if there is someone who can communicate with us in English. Would you be able to introduce our effort to the petition committee? Our goal is to raise awareness through social networks to help the victims' families attain 10 million signatures for their petition. We want to help give them a greater voice so that they can succeed in getting the Sewol bill passed.
저희는 희생자 가족분들의 2만 명 서명 운동을 돕고 있습니다. 영어로 설명된 유일한 서명운동이었고, 따라서 한국 밖의 사람들에게 설명하기가 용이했기 때문입니다. 현 시점의 목표는 이 서명운동이 2만 명의 목표에 다가설 수 있게 하는 것입니다. 이 목표가 달성된 후에는 저희의 성과가 천만 명 운동에도 보탬이 될 수 있게 하고 싶습니다. 이를 위해서 천만 명 서명 운동 자료 역시 영문으로 만들어진다면 좋겠습니다. 하지만 저희로서는 어떤 분께 연락해야 할지, 저희와 영어로 소통해 주실 분이 있는지 잘 알 수가 없습니다. 혹시 가능하시다면 저희의 활동을 천만 명 서명운동본부에도 알려주실 수 있을까요? 저희 또한 SNS로 천만 명 서명 운동을 널리 알리고 싶습니다. 특별법 제정을 위해 더 큰 목소리를 실어드리고 싶습니다. As mentioned above we have received the same request for our banner design from many groups and individuals. It is then up to the volunteers to support this initiative in their regions. Whenever we receive photographs from campaigns in different regions we upload these to our social networks to continue to raise awareness and more interest. A picture speaks a thousand words and we want to continue to motivate the victims' families by sharing these pictures which come from around the world. We do not take an active role in managing the campaigns worldwide or take responsibility for how the volunteer groups choose to raise awareness. We do provide a guideline for them to encourage people to sign the petition online or on paper but do not endorse any political or any other agenda other than simply raising awareness for the victims' families petition and the horrible tragedy that took place. So far this has been a good formula and seems to have worked very well. 위에서 말씀드렸듯 저희는 많은 단체와 개인들로부터 저희 배너를 사용하고 싶다는 문의를 받았습니다. 배너를 드린 후의 모든 일은 그 분들께 달려 있습니다. 다양한 지역에서 저희 피켓을 든 사진을 보내주시면 저희는 SNS에 올리고, 그 사진들이 다시 다른 분들의 관심을 유발합니다. 사진 한 장이 천 마디의 말을 한다고 하는데요. 저희는 계속해서 이 사진들이 희생자 가족분들에게 조금이라도 힘이 되기를 바랍니다. 저희는 캠페인 자체나 개별 자원봉사자들이 캠페인에 참여하는 방법 등에 특별히 관여하지 않습니다. 온라인이나 서면을 통해 캠페인에 참여하는 방법을 안내하는 가이드라인은 마련해두고 있지만, 희생자 가족들을 돕는 목적 이외에 어떤 정치적 색깔이나 다른 현안을 끼워 넣지는 않습니다. 현재까지는 이러한 방식이 역할을 훌륭히 해주었다고 생각하고 있습니다.
Q. What is the final goal of your actions? We hope that through this social media movement the world can understand exactly what led to this tragedy and provide support to the victims' families. The hope is that the victims' families gain encouragement to continue their fight for a special Sewol bill until it is granted. Our empathy for the victims' families is what instills in us the will to work alongside them until the very end. The end goal is to help the petition reach 10 million signatures and show the National Assembly that people around the world support the victims' families wish to find out the true cause of the ferry accident that took away their loved ones. 전세계가 세월호 비극의 진정한 원인을 알게 되고 희생자 가족분들에게 도움의 손길을 내밀 수 있게 되는 것입니다. 가족분들의 특별법 제정을 위한 움직임이 결실을 맺을 그날까지, 용기를 드리고 싶습니다. 그분들에 대한 공감이 저희를 마지막 성공의 순간까지 그분들의 곁에서 뛸 수 있게 하고 있습니다. 마침내 서명은 천만 개가 될 것이고, 국회에 제출되어 사랑하는 가족의 목숨을 앗아간 사고의 진정한 원인을 밝히길 바라는 희생자 가족의 뜻을 전세계인이 지지하고 있음을 알릴 것입니다.
Q. Anything to speak to the Korean society? We encourage those of you in Korea to always remember those who lost their lives in this terrible tragedy and to honor them by working together in full support of the victims' families to spur on positive change so that such a tragedy can never be repeated. This example set by your country should show the rest of the world how important it is to value each and every citizen's lives.
