Samsung Electronics, the leader in the global computer chip and smartphone industries, is South Korea’s biggest company, with about 100,000 workers. An Associated Press investigation found South Korean authorities let Samsung withhold from sick workers and their families crucial information about the chemicals they are exposed to at its computer chip and display factories.

A worker-safety group has documented more than 200 cases of serious illnesses including leukemia, lupus, lymphoma and multiple sclerosis among former Samsung semiconductor and LCD workers. Seventy-six have died, most in their 20s and 30s.

It is extremely difficult for workers to get compensation for occupational diseases from the South Korean government, and without details on their exposure to toxins in their workplaces it is almost impossible. The Associated Press interviewed several former Samsung workers and their families:

HWANG SANG-GI, 61, is the face of a movement that began in 2008 that raised awareness of the workers’ health and safety issues at Samsung semiconductor factories. In 2007, his daughter Yu-mi died of leukemia at the age of 22.

PARK MIN-SOOK, 43, recalls every detail of her work at a Samsung chip factory in Giheung where she spent most of her late teens and early 20s. During the 1990s, there was little awareness about safety risks but a strong focus on products and productivity and intense competition among teams to be more productive and get a better performance review.

PARK WON-HEE, 42, was diagnosed with lupus in 1995, two years after she joined Samsung. She suffered from a type of stroke known as a cerebral infarction in 2011 due to complications from lupus. She believes her disease has something to do with her work at the company as an operator at its semiconductor factory in Bucheon from 1993 to 1998.

SONG BOK-JA, 72, sold her family’s apartment in Busan to cover hospital bills and bone marrow transplant for her daughter, who was diagnosed with leukemia more than a decade after she worked at Samsung. Her daughter Chung Ji-yeon died in 2010. Unaware of the concept of occupational disease, her family did not seek government compensation until last year. They were rejected because Chung was diagnosed with the disease a little over 10 years after she quit her job. Since her daughter died, Song lives in a tiny, rundown house in the neighborhood with her husband; they may have to leave because of impending development.

KIM MI-SEON, 36, began working at a Samsung LCD factory in 1997 at the age of 17. Two years later, she was diagnosed with multiple sclerosis, which resulted in the loss of her sight in 2014. Kim believes her disease was linked to her work at a Samsung LCD factory in Giheung where she helped making screens for laptop computers by soldering parts with lead and cleaning them with acetone and isopropyl alcohol. The government rejected her application for workers’ compensation. She sued, and a court is reviewing the case.
