Park calls for swift passage of bill on ferry disaster

SEOUL, Sept. 16 (Yonhap) — President Park Geun-hye ruled out concessions on Tuesday as she urged the parliament to quickly pass a contentious bill meant to uncover the truth behind April’s ferry disaster.

¼¿ï, 9¿ù 16ÀÏ(¿¬ÇÕ) – ¹Ú±ÙÇý ´ëÅë·ÉÀº È¿äÀÏ Áö³ 4¿ùÀÇ ¼¼¿ùÈ£ Âü»ç µÚ¿¡ ¼û°ÜÁø Áø½ÇÀ» ¹àÈ÷±â À§ÇÑ, ±×°£ ³íÀïÀÌ µÇ¾î¿Â Ưº°¹ýÀ» ±¹È¸°¡ ½Å¼ÓÇÏ°Ô Åë°ú½ÃÅ°±â¸¦ Ã˱¸ÇÏ¸ç ¾çº¸´Â ¾ø´Ù°í ¸»Çß´Ù.

She has been under pressure to allow a proposed ad hoc committee for an independent probe into the ferry sinking to have the right to investigate and indict those responsible for the tragedy, a key demand by the families of the ferry victims.

“The call is not something that I can determine as the president as it would undermine the separation of powers and the judicial system,” Park said in a Cabinet meeting.

Her comments came as there was no end in sight to weeks of political deadlock between the rival parties over the bill on the ferry sinking that left more than 300 people dead.

The main opposition New Politics Alliance for Democracy has vowed to boycott the passage of all other bills until the ferry bill is endorsed by the parliament.

The political row has disrupted parliamentary proceedings, leaving a set of bills meant to revitalize the economy and lift regulations in limbo in the parliament.

“The government’s every effort will come to nothing unless the parliament gives its endorsement,” Park said as she pressured the rival parties to quickly pass a bill on the ferry accident through the parliament.

The floor leaders of the rival parties produced a second deal on the bill last month, but the opposition party did not endorse it.

Complicating the matter, the families of the ferry victims rejected two successive deals by the ruling and opposition parties on the bill.

Park also lashed out at insulting remarks against her as she warned that such comments could hurt the stature of South Korea and its people.

Park’s rare criticism came days after opposition lawmaker Sul Hoon said he thinks “it is a lie” that Park had a romance, referring to allegations by a Japanese newspaper that Park had a secret meeting with an unidentified person at an undisclosed location on the day of the deadly ferry sinking.

Park’s office has rejected the allegations and said Park “was inside the presidential compound” for the seven hours, referring to a time frame of between 10 a.m., when she first received a written report on the ferry accident, and around 5:10 p.m., when she visited the central disaster management office.

Park also called for public understanding over the government’s plan to raise the price of cigarettes by 2,000 won (US$1.92) per pack, an increase of about 80 percent from the current average price of 2,500 won, starting next year.
