South Korean broadcaster MBC-TV retracted its plan to feature popular novelist Lee Oi-soo speaking at a naval base, after earlier remarks he made about the sinking of a South Korean warship stirred anger among lawmakers and the public.

The reversal came after ruling-party lawmaker Ha Tae-kyung lambasted the TV station this week for allowing Mr. Lee, who has a strong following on Twitter, to deliver a lecture to sailors stationed at the base that suffered the loss of 46 sailors in the 2010 sinking of the Cheonan in a torpedo attack.

A monthslong investigation by domestic and international experts and the finding of the torpedo parts led to the conclusion in May that year that North Korea was responsible for the attack. Pyongyang, however, has denied the allegation.

At that time, the novelist wrote on Twitter that “there are so many people who will be good at writing a novel.” “I make my living as a novelist for more than 30 years and I have only this to say. They beat me,” he wrote, indicating his distrust in the official investigation result.

More than three years after the ship went down there are still some, including Mr. Lee, who think questions about the incident remain unanswered, though North Korea is widely believed to have been behind the sinking.
