Two years on: memorializing the sinking of ‘Sewol’ through art
2년이 흐른 후: 세월호 침몰을 예술로 기억하다

SEOUL, April 7 (Yonhap) — Two years have passed since a ferry sank off the southwestern coast of the Korean Peninsula with more than 300 people — mostly young students — aboard.
서울, 4월 7일(연합) – 300명 이상(대부분은 어린 학생)이 승선하고 있던 여객선이 한반도 서남해안에서 침몰한 지 2년이 흘렀다.

For many South Koreans, the sinking of the Sewol ferry on April 16, 2014 and the national trauma from the ensuing aftermath amid botched rescue efforts still remain an open wound.
2014년 4월 16일 세월호 침몰, 그리고 실패한 구조 작업 등 뒤따른 여파로 인한 국가적 충격은 많은 한국인들에게 여전히 아물지 않은 상처를 남겼다.

“April the Eternal Voyage,” a memorial exhibit at the Gyeonggi Museum of Modern Art that opens on April 16, is aimed at offering consolation for those still haunted by it all.
4월 16일 열리는 경기도미술관의 추념전 “사월의 동행”은 세월호 사건으로 여전히 고통받고 있는 이들을 위로하고자 마련됐다.

Through the exhibition comprised of three parts — “Accompany,” “Remember” and “Record” — 22 teams display art works that basically question how and what art can help heal the raw emotions that many people felt while witnessing one of the country’s worst maritime disasters unfolding via live broadcast.
“동행하다”, “기억하다” 그리고 “기록하다”의 세 부분으로 구성된 전시를 통해 22개 팀은, 근본적으로 어떤 예술이, 그리고 어떻게 수많은 이들이 한국 최악의 해양참사 중 하나를 생중계로 접하며 느꼈던 격한 감정을 치유할 수 있는지를 묻는다.

Artist Choi Jung-hwa’s “Breathing Flower,” a 10 meter-wide black lotus, will be installed in front of the mass memorial altar for the victims in Ansan, a city in Gyeonggi Province that is home to the high school students who were aboard the doomed ferry.
최정화 작가의 직경 10미터 크기의 검은 연꽃 “숨쉬는 꽃”은 침몰한 여객선에 승선하고 있던 고등학생들이 살았던 경기도 안산시에 위치한 합동 분향소에 전시될 것이다.

The petals of the flower will periodically open and close to symbolize the strong life force of the lotus which grows out of the mud and beautifully blossoms above the water’s surface.
꽃잎들은 진흙에서 자라나 수면 위에서 아름답게 피어나는 연꽃의 강한 생명력을 상징하듯 주기적으로 열렸다 닫힌다.

Park Eun-tae’s acrylic painting “Waiting People” brings back painful and anxious memories by illustrating devastated families waiting day and night for their loved one’s body to be retrieved and brought back to them on a port overlooking the vast, dark ocean.
박은태 작가의 아크릴 페인팅 “기다리는 사람들”은 광활하고 어두운 바다에 면한 항구에서 밤낮없이 사랑하는 이들의 시신이 수습되어 돌아오기를 기다리던 비통한 가족들의 모습을 통해 고통스럽고 간절한 기억을 상기시킬 것이다.

“Face of Heaven,” an installation by Cho Sook-jin, shows lights emanating from 304 holes that symbolize “endlessness, eternity, indestructibility and perfection.” At the same time, they represent the 304 victims for whom the artist prays to be reborn as stars in their afterlife and to shed light on a dark side of society.
조숙진 작가의 설치물 “천국의 얼굴”은 “끝없음, 영원, 불멸성, 완벽”을 상징하는 304개의 구멍에서 발하는 빛을 보여준다. 동시에 이 304개의 빛은 304명의 희생자가 별로 다시 태어나 사회의 어두운 부분을 밝혀주기를 바라는 작가의 염원을 담고 있다.

Documentary photography project “Children’s Room” is designed to honor the memory of those who met a premature end.
다큐멘터리 사진 프로젝트 “아이들의 방”은 너무 이른 나이에 생을 마감해야했던 이들의 기억을 기리기 위해 기획됐다.

But also, it reminds viewers of the tragic loss that many still believe could have been minimized, if not averted, if the rescue team and crew had been better prepared or stayed more alert. Illustrations of each student by famous illustrator Park Jae-dong will be displayed with the photo series.
하지만 이것은 또한 보는 이들에게 구조대와 승무원들이 제대로 준비되어 있었고 민첩하게 대응했더라면 이 비극적 죽음을 피하거나 최소화할 수 있었을 것이라는 많은 이들의 믿음을 상기시킨다. 유명 삽화가 박제동이 그린 학생들 개개인의 모습이 사진들과 함께 전시될 것이다.

Through “Trivial Monument,” artist Hong Soon-myung tries to resolve or relieve a sense of guilt and sorrow that he, as an adult, felt for the young students.
“사소한 기념비”를 통해 홍순명 작가는 스스로 어른으로서 어린 학생들에게 느꼈던 죄책감과 슬픔을 달래거나 덜려고 한다.

He brought objects from the Paengmok port on the southern coast of Jindo Island, South Jeolla Province, which served as a staging ground for rescue operations, and displays them with an oil painting.
홍순명 작가는 구조작업의 중심지였던 전라남도 진도의 남쪽 해안가에 위치한 팽목항에서 몇몇 물건을 가져와 유화와 함께 전시한다.

The memorial exhibit runs until June 26.
추념전은 6월 26일까지 계속된다.
