SEOUL (Reuters) – South Korean and U.S. officials failed to agree on Tuesday on how to move forward on discussions over their five-year-old free trade agreement that Washington is seeking to change to help cut its trade deficit with Asia’s fourth-largest economy.

Kim said Seoul had stressed that the U.S. trade deficit with South Korea was not the result of the bilateral trade deal and proposed a joint study to examine the effects of the agreement. ±èÇöÁ¾ Àå°üÀº Çѱ¹°úÀÇ ¹«¿ª¿¡¼ »ý±ä ¹Ì±¹ÀÇ ¹«¿ªÀûÀÚ´Â ÇÑ¹Ì ¾çÀÚ ¹«¿ªÇùÁ¤ÀÇ °á°ú°¡ ¾Æ´Ï¶ó´Â »ç½ÇÀ» °Á¶ÇÏ¸ç °øµ¿ ¿¬±¸¸¦ ÁøÇàÇØ ¹«¿ªÇùÁ¤ÀÇ È¿°ú¸¦ °ËÁõÇÒ °ÍÀ» Á¦¾ÈÇÏ¿´´Ù.

In 2016, South Korea’s car exports to the United States stood at $16.2 billion, while its imports of U.S. cars were $1.74 billion, a trade ministry official said based on data from the Korea Trade International Association. »ê¾÷Åë»óÀÚ¿øºÎ ¼Ò¼Ó °ü°èÀÚ´Â Çѱ¹¹«¿ªÇùȸÀÇ µ¥ÀÌÅ͸¦ ±âÁØÀ¸·Î ÇÏ¿´À» ¶§, 2016³â Çѱ¹ÀÇ ¹Ì±¹ Â÷·® ¼öÃâ¾×Àº 162¾ï ´Þ·¯¿¡ À°¹ÚÇÑ ¹Ý¸é, ¹Ì±¹ Â÷·® ¼öÀÔ¾×Àº 17¾ï 4õ¸¸ ´Þ·¯¿´´Ù°í ¹àÇû´Ù.
Seoul maintains that the deal has been mutually beneficial, and said last month that the joint committee meeting did not necessarily mean that South Korea would renegotiate terms.
