Rakesh Kapoor, the chief executive of Reckitt Benckiser, issued a personal apology for 96 deaths in South Korea, one day after the region’s biggest retailer called for a boycott of the consumer goods giant.
레킷벤키저의 회장인 라케시 카푸어는 한국의 최대 대형마트가 소매품 제조 거대회사인 레킷벤키저 제품 불매를 촉구한 다음 날 96명의 한국인 사망자에 대해 직접 사과했다.

South Korea’s supermarket chain Lotte Mart has cleared the company’s products from its shelves amid a growing backlash in the country, which is a major source of growth for Reckitt Benckiser’s emerging markets business.
새롭게 부상하는 레킷벤키저의 시장 산업에 있어서 성장의 주요 소스인 한국 시장에서 전국적으로 비난이 점점 쇄도하는 가운데 대형마트 체인 롯데마트가 레킷벤키저의 상품 판매를 전격 중단했다.

The move comes the same week as the company admitted for the first time selling a humidifier disinfectant that killed 96 people and caused illness for a further 400.
이것은 이 회사가 96명의 사망자와 400명의 피해자를 낸 가습기 살균제를 판매한 사실을 처음으로 인정한 시기와 때를 같이 했다.

Reckitt Benckiser – best known for brands including Cillit Bang, Dettol, and Durex – withdrew the disinfectant made by its Korean Oxy unit in 2011 after a government probe suggested a link between lung damage and humidifier disinfectants.
실릿뱅, 데톨, 듀렉스와 같은 브랜드로 가장 잘 알려진 레킷벤키저는 한국 정부의 한 조사에서 폐 손상과 가습기 살균제 사이의 연관성이 밝혀지자 2011년 한국 옥시가 생산하던 살균제를 회수했다.

The environment ministry has said none of the tainted products were sold outside South Korea.
환경부는 오염된 제품들은 한국 외에서는 팔린 적이 없다고 밝혔다.

Earlier this week Reckitt Benckiser’s Asia boss, Ataur Safdar, issued a public apology, but was attacked by some emotional relatives who slapped him at the press briefing.
이번 주 초, 레킷벤키저의 아시아 총괄 아타 사프달은 공개 사과문을 발표했지만, 흥분한 피해자 가족들로부터 기자회견 중 뒤통수를 맞는 등 공격을 당했다.

Mr Kapoor said at the company’s annual general meeting: “I am personally very sorry and very much regret that our Oxy product caused harm to people in South Korea.

“We must acknowledge this and move on to make sure this doesn’t happen again and I am personally committed to ensuring that this doesn’t happen again.”

Mr Kapoor, who has worked at Reckitt Benckiser since 1987, has come under fire after his pay package was doubled to £23m.
레킷벤키저에서 1987년부터 일해온 카푸어 씨는 연봉이 두 배인 2천3백만 유로로 오르면서 비난을 사왔다.

Just under a quarter of shareholders, 23.8pc, voted against Reckitt Benckiser’s remuneration policy at the company’s AGM while 17.7pc voted against its remuneration report.
회사의 연차 총회에서 25%보다 조금 적은 23.8%의 주주들이 레킷벤키저의 보수정책에 반대한 반면, 17.7%는 보수보고서에 반대했다.

Mr Kapoor, chairman Adrian Bellamy and remuneration chairman Judith Sprieser, all suffered opposition to their re-election with an average 5pc of votes cast against them.

Mr Kapoor is the second highest paid boss in the FTSE 100 after Sir Martin Sorrewho defended his £70m remuneration from WPP last week.

“We have very strong concerns about board governance and board refreshment,” Deborah Gilshan, a spokesman for The Railways Pension Fund said.

The investor directed her attack at the head of the remuneration committee, Judy Sprieser, who had previously indicated she would step down after 12 years but has been put up for re-election.
투자자인 데보라 길샨 씨는, 12년을 일한 후 물러나기로 이전에 약속했으나 다시 재선에 나선 주디 스프리저 보수 위원회 회장을 공격했다.

She added that the Railways Pension Fund had held conversations with the company’s chairman to raise concerns about the chief executive’s pay. “It is a pity that the remuneration committee and Judy Sprieser have failed to address these concerns,” she said.

The Railways Pension Fund voted against Ms Sprieser’s re-election and also rejected the remuneration policy.

Chairman Adrian Bellamy defended Ms Sprieser and the remuneration policy, arguing that investors should recognise that remuneration was linked to the company’s strong performance.

“Our remuneration policy has produced substantial results not just last year,” said Mr Bellamy.

The board was also criticised by Cliff Weight, a director at the shareholder advocacy group ShareSoc, who called Mr Kapoor’s pay package “unjustifiably high” and said that “it is difficult to lead a cost conscious company when you are paid excessively yourself”.
주주시민단체 쉐어소사이어티 이사인 클리프 와이트 역시 이사회를 비난했으며 카푸어 씨의 연봉을 “이치에 맞지 않게 높다”고 평가하고 “스스로에게 지나칠 정도로 많은 돈을 지급하며 비용절감 기업을 이끄는 것은 어렵다”고 말했다.

Reckitt Benckiser last year launched a cost cutting initiative that included asking employees to fly economy.
지난해 레킷벤키저는 직원들에게 이코노미석을 이용하라고 요구하는 것을 포함한 비용절감 정책을 시작했다.

Ms Sprieser addressed the comments by saying that the success of Reckitt Benckiser’s remuneration policy has been its “simplicity, consistency and transparency”.
스피리저 씨는 레킷벤키저의 보수정책의 성공은 “단순성, 일관성, 투명성”이었다고 논평했다.

“It works and it is delivering value for our shareholders,” she said.

Ms Sprieser declined to comment on the sidelines of the meeting whether the shareholder reaction would prompt a change to the remuneration policy.
