SEOUL, May 19 (UPI) — Police are investigating a Seoul vice mayor for providing support to families of the Sewol ferry sinking victims during their sit-in protests. Im Jong-seok, the city’s vice mayor for political affairs, told South Korean newspaper Donga Ilbo and other media outlets that he received a summons from Seoul police on Monday for a Thursday probe at police headquarters.

The Korea Times reported South Korean police have questioned seven Seoul officials in response to complaints from a conservative civic organization that accused city hall of neglecting its responsibilities by allowing protesters to “squat” in the city center.

The right-wing group also has charged Seoul Mayor Park Won-soon of “dereliction of duty” for reaching out to victims’ families – and providing them with water and medicine during an August hunger strike.

Im said he will comply with the summons and said the city defends its decision to allow protesters to occupy public spaces in their sit-in tents. Any support, he said, was provided because the health and safety of city residents was a priority for city hall.

South Korea media reported city hall is indignant about the multiple probes into its ranks. One unidentified official said he is skeptical the probe would be taking place if city hall was under a conservative leadership.

The capsized South Korean ferry Sewol killed 304 people in April 2014 – most of them high school students on a field trip. Their grieving families have demanded the government for better investigations into the causes of the sinking.
