For more than a month, hundreds of thousands of South Koreans have spilled onto the streets each Saturday to protest President Park Geun-hye’s relationship with Choi Soon-sil — the powerful daughter of a late cult leader who is accused of massive influence peddling.
한달 넘게 수십만 명의 국민들이 토요일마다 거리로 쏟아져나와 사망한 사이비종교 지도자의 딸로 중대한 국정농단으로 비난받고 있는 최순실과 박근혜 대통령과의 관계에 항의하고 있다.

The allegations have plunged the world’s 11th biggest economy into an unprecedented crisis and exposed a series of bizarre revelations — including the mass government purchase of erectile dysfunction medication.
그런 의혹들은 세계 11번째 경제국을 전례 없는 위기로 빠뜨렸고 정부에서 대량으로 발기부전 치료제를 구입하는 등 이상한 일들이 벌어진 사실이 드러났다.

The corruption scandal has also prompted leaders of the country’s opposition to consider a vote on Park’s impeachment — possibly as early as Friday.
부패 스캔들은 또한 이르면 금요일 박 대통령의 탄핵안 표결을 고려하도록 야당 지도자들을 자극했다.

Park, 64, has immunity from prosecution in the case as long as she remains in office but is alleged by prosecutors to have colluded with Choi.She has denied wrongdoing but acknowledged carelessness in her ties with her friend, who has already been indicted.

Choi, the woman at the heart of the scandal, is the daughter of late cult leader Choi Tae-min.

Despite having no official role in government, South Korean prosecutors allege Choi wielded huge power, had a say in policy decisions and exploited her relationship with the president to bully companies into handing over tens of millions to businesses and foundations she controlled.
정부 공직이 없음에도 불구하고 막강한 권력을 행사했고 정책 결정에 관여하고 대통령과의 관계를 악용해 기업을 협박해 그녀가 운영하는 재단에 수백억원을 출연하게 했다고 검찰은 주장하고 있다.

Samsung was dragged into the case on Nov. 7, when its headquarters were raided by investigators searching for evidence of the beleaguered smartphone giant’s ties to Choi.
삼성은 11월 7일 최순실과 이 스마트폰 대기업 간의 관련 증거를 찾기 위해 수사관들에 의해 본사가 압수 수색을 당하면서 이 사건에 휘말렸다.

According to prosecutors, Choi also used illicitly obtained funds to pay for equestrian training for her daughter.

In October, South Korea’s Segye Ilbo newspaper reported Choi said she received drafts of Park’s speeches after her election victory but denied she had access to other official material, influenced state affairs or benefited financially.

Park’s friendship with the Choi family stems back decades.

The New York Times has reported that Choi`s father — an ex-police officer turned cult leader — befriended a grieving Park soon after her mother was assassinated in 1974.
뉴욕타임스는 일본 순사에서 사이비종교 지도자가 된 최순실의 아버지가 1974년 어머니가 암살된 후 슬퍼하던 박근혜와 친분을 맺게 되었다고 보도했다.

Park`s mom, Yuk Young-soo, was fatally shot by a sympathizer of North Korea who was attempting to kill her husband at the National Theater in Seoul.
박 대통령의 어머니 육영수 여사는 서울 국립극장에서 그녀의 남편을 겨냥했던 북한 동조자의 총격을 받아 사망했다.

According to leaked U.S. diplomatic cables reported in Korean media, Choi told Park that her dead mother had appeared to her father in dreams requesting the cult leader help the young woman. Park`s father — military dictator Park Chung-hee — was also assassinated by his own spy chief in 1979.
한국 언론에서 보도한 미국 외교문서 내용에 따르면, 최순실은 박근혜에게 죽은 박 씨의 어머니가 사이비종교 지도자인 자신 아버지의 꿈에 나타나 어린 박근혜를 도우라 했다고 전했다. 박근혜의 아버지이자 군부 독재자였던 박정희 또한 1979년 자신 휘하의 중앙정보부장에 의해 암살당했다.

“Rumors are rife that the late pastor had complete control over Park [Geun-hye]`s body and soul during her formative years and that his children accumulated enormous wealth as a result,” a U.S. diplomatic cable reported according to Korea Joongang Daily.
중앙일보에 따르면 이 미국 외교문서에 “지금은 고인이 된 목사가 박 대통령의 성장기에 몸과 영혼을 완전히 지배했으며 그 결과로 그의 자식들이 그 결과로 엄청난 부를 쌓았다는 소문이 만연하다”고 기록돼있다.

On Tuesday, Park said she would leave office early if ordered to by the nation`s parliament.
화요일, 박 대통령은 국회가 합의할 경우 조기 퇴진을 하겠다고 했다.

“I will abide to whatever arrangement the ruling and the opposition parties work out, including reducing my term,” Park said during a news conference in Seoul. “I am ready to put all things down.”
“대통령직 임기 단축을 포함한 진퇴 문제를 국회의 결정에 맡기겠다”고 박 대통령이 대국민 담화 중 말했다. “이제 모든 것을 내려놓았다.”

This will not be enough for many South Koreans, according to political scientist Kim Ki Jung.
정치학자 김기정 교수에 따르면 많은 한국인들은 만족하지 못하고 있다.

“That President Park did not admit any of her wrongdoing in her address and will further infuriate the public,” the Yonsei University professor told NBC News.
“박 대통령은 담화문에서 그녀의 잘못 중 어떤 것도 시인하지 않았으며 대중을 더 화나게 할 것”이라고 연세대 김기정 교수가 NBC에 말했다.

Many South Koreans citizens that NBC News spoke to on Tuesday were unforgiving.

“In the last weeks as the scandal got exposed, she only proved that she is incapable to carry out her duty as a president,” said Chung Chol Joon, a pharmacist from Seoul. “She is totally incompetent.”

Little blue pills also play a part in the scandal — make that around 360 little blue pills.

On Wednesday, Park’s offices confirmed allegations by an opposition lawmaker that her office had bought hundreds of doses of Viagra pills last December.
수요일, 청와대는 지난 12월 수백 정의 비아그라를 구입했다는 야당 의원의 의혹을 인정했다.

Park’s office claimed the purchase had been made to help treat altitude sickness among the president’s aides and security staff ahead of a trip to Africa.
청와대는 아프리카 순방을 앞두고 보좌진과 경호원들의 고산병 치료를 위해 비아그라를 구입했다고 해명했다.

The pills weren’t used, said Jung Youn-kuk, a spokesman for South Korea’s equivalent of the White House known as the Blue House.

The mysterious Viagra revelations increased the growing pressure on Park’s administration.
이해하기 힘든 비아그라 구매 사실이 드러나면서 박근혜 행정부에 대한 압력이 증대되었다.

Prosecutors on Sunday said they thought Park was involved in Choi’s criminal activities and enabled her friend to meddle in state affairs.
일요일, 검찰은 박 대통령이 최 씨의 범죄행위와 관련이 있고 최 씨가 국정에 개입하도록 허용한 것으로 판단한다고 밝혔다.

Prosecutors also believe two presidential aides allegedly bullied companies into giving tens of millions of dollars to foundations and businesses the cult leader’s daughter controlled.
검찰은 또한 대통령의 두 비서관이 기업들을 협박해 사이비 종교 교주의 딸이 지배하는 재단과 사업에 수백억원의 돈을 출연하게 했다고 보고 있다.

Choi and the aides have been indicted but Park’s office has denied the accusations, while refusing attempts to interrogate her in person.

Park’s fate depends on whether the country’s opposition parties can lure members of the president’s own party cross the aisle to vote for impeachment.
박 대통령의 운명은 야당들이 대통령이 속한 새누리당의 의원들이 당론을 거스르고 탄핵에 찬성하도록 이끌어낼 수 있는지에 달려 있다.

In the meantime, further demonstrations are expected Saturday which may push lawmakers one way or another.
한편 토요일에는 국회의원들에게 찬성이냐 반대냐 하는 갈림길로 밀어붙일 수 있는 더 많은 시위가 예상되고 있다.

Park’s approval ratings have slipped as low as 4 percent, with her disapproval rating standing at 93 percent, according to a poll by Gallup Korea, which is not affiliated with the U.S.-based Gallup, Inc.

Only 9 percent of people aged over 60 said Park was doing well, according to the Gallup Korea survey.
한국갤럽은 60세 이상에서도 9%만이 박근혜가 잘 하고 있다고 응답했다고 밝혔다.

Her support is lowest amongst young people. Ninety-nine percent of 19-29 year-olds and 98 percent of people in their 30s disapproved of Park, according to Gallup Korea.
젊은 층의 지지율은 최저이다. 19세에서 29세까지 99% 그리고 30대의 98%가 박근혜를 불신하고 있다.

Jang Haeng Joon, a computer programmer from Seoul, reflected the anger and frustration many fellow South Koreans feel.
서울에 사는 컴퓨터 프로그래머인 장행준 씨는 많은 한국인들이 느끼고 있는 분노와 좌절감을 표현했다.

“There will be more people going to the protest on coming Saturday,” she told NBC News. “She made it clear that she had no idea about separating the private matters from the public responsibilities. Her biggest crime is that she failed to stop her friend from abusing the presidential power.”
장 씨는 “다가오는 토요일 시위에 더 많은 사람들이 함께할 것”이며 “박근혜는 공적인 책임과 사적인 문제를 구분하지 못한다는 걸 여실히 드러냈다. 박근혜의 가장 큰 죄는 최순실이 대통령 원한을 남용하는 것을 막지 못한 것이다”고 NBC 뉴스에 전했다.
